Dr. Alice Nabatanzi, PhD

Senior Lecturer of Phytomedicine and Nutraceuticals

Makerere University, Uganda

Dr. Alice Nabatanzi is a Senior Lecturer of Phytomedicine and Nutraceuticals at Makerere University, Uganda, with expertise in phytomedicine, natural products, nutraceuticals, and product development. She holds a PhD in Natural Products (Nutraceuticals) from Makerere University and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where her work focused on phytobiomolecules for human cancer treatment. Dr. Nabatanzi is an Early Career Fellow of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD-TWAS) and a Carnegie Corporation of New York Early Career Research Leader Fellow. In 2023, she received the Best Innovator Award at Uganda’s Appropriate Technologies Expo for developing an innovative and sustainable water purification system. Her multidisciplinary research focuses on phytomedicine, medicinal plant bioactive compounds, nutraceuticals, traditional African foods, phytogenics for animal health, and sustainable environmental health solutions. She is passionate about translating research into practical innovations and has developed several value-added natural products, including phytomedicines, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and other plant-based products with commercial and community impact. Beyond research, Dr. Nabatanzi is the Founder of the Alice Mabira Foundation (AMAF), through which she promotes community empowerment by supporting women and youth in developing home-based enterprises, improving nutrition, and adding value to indigenous natural resources. This work reflects her commitment to translating scientific knowledge into sustainable livelihood opportunities and improved public health. She has published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals, secured competitive research grants, and continues to bridge scientific discovery, innovation, and community impact.
