Dr. Salmina Mokgehle

Dr Salmina Mokgehle is a Senior Lecturer in Horticultural Sciences at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), South Africa. Her research focuses on underutilised and medicinal crops, with particular emphasis on their role in sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural systems. Her work integrates horticultural science, plant physiology, indigenous knowledge systems, and climate-smart agriculture to advance sustainable food production, biodiversity conservation, and rural livelihoods. Dr Mokgehle is an NRF Y2-rated researcher whose scholarly contributions have gained increasing international recognition. Her research interests include sustainable cultivation practices, plant-soil interactions, water-use efficiency, phytochemical optimisation, and conservation-oriented production systems.
She has successfully led and collaborated on nationally and internationally funded research projects and has supervised postgraduate students across diverse areas of horticultural science. Dr Mokgehle actively collaborates with researchers, industry partners, and policymakers to translate scientific research into practical solutions that support resilient agricultural systems and community development.
